Secondary Materials Health & Safety (SMHS)

This course is suitable for Teachers, Technicians, TA’s and those supporting learners in the workshop.

This course will enable colleagues to acquire H&S accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using the following:

  • Drilling machine
  • Sanding machine
  • Portable power tools (drill and sander only)
  • Off hand grinder
  • Hand tools
  • Heat treatment
  • Plastics moulding
  • Power fret saws
  • Polishing machines
  • Grinding
  • Textiles machinery
  • Metal cutting mechanical/band saw

 

Specialist Extention Levels

 

S1HS – Wood Sawing Machines

Course colleagues will undertake a variety of hand on practical exercises over the day to prepare them for the range of woodworking machining processes required to prepare materials accurately and safely within school workshops.

Machines covered will include the circular saw, narrow band saw, vertical saw and chop/radial arm saw. Course colleagues will receive a course pack covering current legislation and the knowledge, skills and understanding required to safely use this range of woodworking machinery in schools.

The course is suitable for teachers, technicians and other staff who are required to use this equipment. All the activities conform to the current DATA Training Standards.

 

S2HS – Centre Lathe

This course will enable colleagues to acquire health and safety accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using the machinery to complete a simple set of tasks.

The tasks included will be Facing Off, Turning Down, Taper Turning, Drilling, Knurling and Parting Off. All the activities conform to the current DATA Training Standards.

 

S6HS – Milling Machine

This course will enable colleagues to acquire health and safety accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using the for using a Vertical Milling Machine for shaping metals and plastics to complete set tasks.

This will include setting up the mill, clamping blanks plus use of end mills, slot drills and fly cutting. The course is suitable for both teachers and technicians. All the activities conform to the current DATA Training Standards.

 

S7HS – Wood Turning Lathe

This course will enable colleagues to acquire health and safety accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using the machinery to complete simple set tasks.

The tasks included will be preparing timber, parallel turning, taper turning, convex turning, concave turning, finishing & parting off. Colleagues will undertake several exercises, including turning between centres and using faceplates and chucks. All the activities conform to the current DATA Training Standards.

 

S8HS – Planer / Thicknesser

This course will enable colleagues to acquire health and safety accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using a surface planer and thicknesser.

The training will cover a variety of ways this machine is used. The course is suitable for teachers, technicians and other staff who are required to use this equipment. All the activities conform to the current DATA Training Standards.

 

S9HS – Portable Power Tools

This course will enable colleagues to acquire health and safety accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using the machinery to complete set tasks.

The machines covered include the portable grinder, portable rotating saw, portable biscuit cutter, portable reciprocating saw, portable planing machine, portable router and router table. All the activities conform to the current DATA Training Standards.
